Squads

UNSWRC offers a range of different squads to suit rowers of any age or ability. The table below shows the mornings that each squad trains during the week.

Novice

The Novice squad is for those who are are new to the sport or have less than 6 months of rowing experience, and who are aged under 27 years. Novice rowers have the opportunity to try a variety of different sessions each week including water sessions, ergs and circuit training. They develop basic rowing technique in a fun, crew-focused setting. There are both male and female Novice squads.

Please note that to join the Novice squad, you must have successful completed our Learn to Row course (or an equivalent external course), unless you are joining within 7 weeks of O-Week.
Novice

Recreation

The Recreational squad caters for experienced rowers who want to row for fitness and fun. The squad trains 1-3 times a week on the water, aiming to enjoy water sessions while maintaining fitness. It is most suited for those who are time-poor or are only available intermittently.
Recreation

Competitive / Senior

Rowers in the Competitive or Senior squads typically aim at club events ranging from A to D grade. Senior rowers train 4 times a week on the water, while Competitive Squad members row thrice a week. Rowers develop a high level of proficiency in singles and a range of other boats, depending on the regatta event they are targeting.

Masters

Masters rowers are those who are aged 27 years or over. UNSWRC offers a dedicated squad for both masters women and masters men.

Coxes

Coxes (also know as coxswains) are those who steer fours, quads and eights. In addition to steering, a cox provides vital feedback to the crew through speakers built in to the boat, and can provide some coaching depending on their skill level.
